Fence Maintenance & Installation Tips for Sydney Homes

We have compiled a collection of fencing-related acts and information, conveniently organised in one location for your easy access.

Looking After Your Fence

Cleaning Colorbond

Maintenance for Colorbond and aluminum fencing is relatively simple and straightforward, primarily requiring regular cleaning to maintain its appearance and prevent corrosion.

  • We suggest washing the surfaces with mild detergent and water every six months, especially in coastal areas where salt buildup can occur.

  • Inspect the fencing periodically for any signs of damage or wear and address any issues promptly.

  • Spiderwebs can be brushed off using a soft bristle broom.

Unlike wood, Colorbond and aluminum do not require painting or staining, but ensuring that the finishes remain intact will help prolong their lifespan and performance.

Avoiding rough bristles & give the fence a wash down if any harsh chemicals including lawn fertilisers or if animals urinate on the fence.

To ensure the longevity of your fence, it is crucial to avoid placing excessive weight against it or hanging items like clotheslines on the fence. Such practices can cause undue stress, leading to warping, leaning, or even structural failure over time.

By keeping your fence clear of heavy objects and maintaining its integrity, you can extend its lifespan and preserve its aesthetic appeal.

Timber Fence Maintenance Tips:

Proper timber fence maintenance helps extend its life, preserve its appearance, and protect your property.

  • Reseal or stain every 2–3 years for weather protection

  • Replace damaged boards to prevent further issues

Pet Safety During Fencing

As we prepare for the construction of your new fence, it's essential to make plans regarding your pet, as Joel will be in and out of the premises, using power tools and taking down the existing barrier, we want to ensure your pet is safe and there is no risks posed of injury or escaping.

Keeping your beloved pet secure with a leash, designated secure area, indoors or with a family member is ideal during this process, especially since the fence will be left down overnight to allow the concrete in the post holes to set properly. Ensuring your furry friend remains safe while are also ensuring Joel is able to deliver his work to his high standard to ensure it is built to last!

Once the concrete has set, we’ll return the next day to install the sleepers and sheets, completing your new enclosure.

Weather Delays

Fencing installation is heavily dependent on weather conditions, as various elements can pose significant risks to both safety and the integrity of the fence.

  • High winds, for instance, can create pressure on posts, causing them to set out of alignment, while the risk of sheets being lifted by gusts can lead to serious injuries due to potential slicing hazards.

  • Additionally, working in extreme heat not only increases the risk of fire with the use of a grinder but also makes handling steel components dangerous, as they can become searingly hot and lead to burns. The discomfort of working outdoors under such conditions can also heighten the risk of heat stroke, particularly when performing strenuous tasks.

  • Rain poses its own set of challenges, jeopardising the integrity of freshly set concrete while also making it unsafe to use power tools due to the risk of slipping in mud.

Ultimately, the combination of these weather-related factors necessitates a flexible approach to fencing installation, ensuring that work is conducted safely and effectively only when conditions are appropriate.
